Figure & Ground – Twelve Guided Meditations

These twelve guided meditations all focus on different aspects of self construction – distinction making, orienting experience in reference to the self, the sense of the location of awareness. They are offered as stand-alone emptiness explorations, or as skill development for the meditator who is interested in cultivating skill and facility with releasing subtle clinging.

In some ways, for me, they tell a story of the imputed self – how does the attention and sense of awareness establish some sense of fixed identity. Over the past few years my teaching has been focused on finding ways to creatively explore around the structures of self and object, and the below exercises are examples of that. These were taken from a course I offered titled “Figure & Ground”.

Week 1: Distinction making / space and solid
Week 2: Sense of the location of awareness
Week 3: Mapping / sense of location relative to the self
Week 4: Tuning into frequencies of experience
Week 5: Using these practices as a basis for “insight ways of looking / 3Cs practice”
